In the electricity sector in Spain, there are the main five main players known as “Las Grandes” (Endesa, Iberdrola, Gas Natural Fenosa, EDP EspaƱa & Viesgo) who control the infrastructure of Spain’s electric grid as well as the installation and monitoring of meters.

The distribution of electricity is just one part of these companies’ business. Who you interact with depends on which one “touches” your territorial zone in Spain. More often than not it corresponds to your autonomy or province, but sometimes they cross over borders.

The Distributor’s responsibilities include:

  • Maintain the Medium and Low Voltage networks.
  • Ensure the electrical supply quality.
  • Troubleshoot issues (usually only those that originate outside the home or locally affected).
  • Maintain and measure equipment (meters and maximeters).
  • Perform the meter reading and provide it to the marketer of each electric user (currently, every two months).
  • Make effective and low supplies, changes of owner and changes in power or tariff at the request of the customer, who in turn requests the dealer.

What is a marketer?

HolaLuz is one of the various companies you can choose for electricity in Spain. They provide and bill the service, getting the electricity to your home through the network owned by the distributor in your area. No matter who your marketer is, the distributor will always be the same.

The marketer is responsible for the following:

  • Buying electricity wholesale and reselling to end customers through the local area distributor.
  • Billing the service through the readings sent by the distributor of each customer.
  • In the case of the Free Market Sector, in which HolaLuz operates, determine the electric rates.

The other and more well-known sector is the “Reference” or Regulated Market, where prices are regulated by the Spanish Government. These companies currently offer a PVPC a variable price, depending on supply and demand.

“Reference” Companies also have Free Market Traders, the second type, which set their own rates, taking into account the market price and applying certain government regulated costs. They are the companies that offer fixed prices, flat rates (or in our case the fixed No Surprises Rate).

As a totally independent player in the free market, HolaLuz feels an additional responsibility to manage everything that is necessary with distributor, including outages, in order to ensure a high quality service.I
